Thank you.

imageThe Last Day in Lukla

3rd December 2013

I was asked a day or two ago which was my favourite blog. I should repost it as a thank you for all the support towards EBC. Good idea, so here it is. It has to be this one. We are over £6000 now.

Sometimes words are not enough.

Saturday 19 th October 2013

For this last blog I did intend to say thank you, individually, to all the people who have helped me achieve the target amount of money, and beyond, for this trek. I also wanted to list all those who have helped me in the training. The list would have gone on for days, a bit like the end credits on Lord of The Rings: The Return of the King! Also, I know some people wouldn’t want to be named.

So in the end I have decided to say this, with apologies to unknown authors.

                 Thanks for helping me

..and Mrs..  You know she lived at..

                 Thanks for being my friend

                  …and Joey’s

                Thanks for thinking of me

                 ……and Macmillan’s wonderful work

                 Thanks for caring about me

                  …….and supporting Macmillan nurses

Thanks for everything you did for me

…….and everyone this money will help

                I know it cost you

                but I know you care

               You shouldn’t have

               But I’m glad you did!

You are bright stars that shine on our lives

You picked us up when we were down

You will be with me every step I take

                You are all unforgettable

           Thank you and Goodbye.

Everest Base Camp with Macmillan (28 days to go!!)

Saturday 5th October 2013

I know, I know it’s October. Only 28 days to go before we set off for Kathmandu and the trip to Base Camp. (Which means it is only 21 days to the most important wedding of the 21st century to date. I’d better do some drafting of a speech. Any ideas will be gratefully received) I am, therefore, beside myself with excitement. Adrenaline is coursing through my veins. I need to calm down or I will be impossible to talk to for the next four weeks. I am seriously talking to myself everyday. Saying, amongst other things…

‘Keep up the training.’

‘Watch what you are doing.’

‘Complete your checklist of things to do.’

‘Find time for important things…writing a speech.’

‘Try to ensure the last few fund raising activities go off without a hitch.’

‘Stay calm….I can’t…. Yes you can….No I – YES, you can.’

You get the idea. It feels like the first days of spring, you know that time. The winter is over and all the best weather is still to come and you just feel like running and hopping along the road. You feel happy, like Jacob Marley did on Christmas morning when he knew he was alive.

Training has gone Ok this week but I feel a little bit under prepared for the hilliness of the trek. Should I spend some days next week going up and down some more peaks in The Lakes. Are those who are going on the trip who live in Scotland and Wales going up and down their peaks every weekend? Does it matter? Too many questions, not enough answers. Weight. No movement. Yoga. Good I am definitely improving and I will keep this up after I return from the trip. Walks three. All up hill and all tiring, (didn’t I tell you I’ve had ‘man- flu’ all week). 10hrs 35mins; 26:1mls and 5280ft climbed. A 1000m (3280feet) ascent and descent, at altitude, in one day sounds like it will be fun!!

What I learnt this week. How to pack (when you have man-flu). I finally packed the sleeping bag this week. It only folds neatly into the long term storage bag, for the smaller trekking carrier you literally just stuff it any any old way. After a demonstration by a ‘veteran’ traveller I did it myself, twice.

Answers to the final quiz.

Oscar Wilde wrote The Selfish Giant.

Mayhem…etc occurred at the first car boot sale. And all the others actually.

Barden Moor, don’t like it but I keep going back to walk over and across it because it is always a challenge in anything other than perfect weather. (Apparently it is also some kind of nature reserve too! Amazing)

008Where is this Moonscape? Taken from a high point, far away. (Have I told you?!! I’ve had man -flu so apologies for the quality of the image)

A final plea for you to tell your friends, neighbours, work colleagues, and anybody who might remotely support The Quest. Tell them  why I am doing this and ask them to show their support fro the work of Macmillan. This can be done via my justgiving page on this link.

http://www.justgiving.com/Charles-Appleyard

It will all help Macmillan and their nurses carry out a difficult and demanding service at a time when individuals, and their families, need them most. Thank you.

Bye.

The Big Month (Everest Base Camp….Very Soon)

Saturday 28th September 2013

As summer passes into autumn, the weather improves, the sun shines and the weather warms up! Yes that is typical, I know.I therefore realise my second block of training is at an end. I’m about as fit as I probably ever will be! How fit is that? Well the best I could do. Can I do any more?  Yes a little, but now  I will try to maintain what I’ve achieved so far, improve a bit more and try not to be stupid about over doing it. (Therefore must cut down on ice cream and cake!!)  September has been my biggest month for training and I now need to focus on other things as well. As a novice on this kind of trip it even comes down to packing!! For example I spent an hour this week wrestling with fresh air… And I lost! Not only that I was tired out and my legs and arms ached. Why? Well, my sleeping bag comes in a big sack, which it is normally stored in. However, to save space it, supposedly, fits into a little travel bag that takes up the space of a two shoe bag! For one hour I rolled, pushed, squeezed, shoved, turned, twisted this bag all ways, it just doesn’t fit. As I moved the bag the air kept moving from one side of the bag to the other, one corner to the next, top to bottom and so on! The air moves out of one area and builds up in another. I took to stuffing it, jumping, kneading, kneeing, tying, then ….eventually cussing, shouting, having a major paddy and appealing to a greater force. It is still on the floor in the bedroom, mocking me and quietly sniggering! It’s like one of those twenty foot bendy snails that comes out of a baked bean can!!! ‘I will not be put in a smaller bag.’ Hence I need more practice! Any suggestions?

Stats of the week. One Yoga class, apparently I’m some kind of special specimen! I cannot stretch my hamstring muscles, no matter what I do and believe me I do some serious movements. It is bizarre. Try it yourself I bet you can do it! Runs two = aching thighs! Walks two. Bike rides. One. Exercise circuits. Three. Total: 9hrs 49mins; 39:6mls and 4010ft climbed. Weight gained. One pound. What is going on? The weather was good all week. Hurrah!

Did you answer the quiz questions?

Answers. 1. £5000. 2. John Charles, a gentle giant of a man (Google him now!) 3. Horse Riding. (conflict of interest?!)

This weeks questions.

1. How did Oscar Wilde feature in my blog?

2. What was the cause of mayhem, money and madness?

3. Where did I nearly turn disaster into catastrophe, ie where is my nemesis?

In this week after  Macmillan Coffee Mornings I have received more donations towards our total. All because people wish to support Macmillan and to give something back after the help they have been given. Thank you everyone.Show us what you’ve been up to for the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning and share ideas and recipes through our Online CommunityTwitter and Facebook.

Less than thirty days before I set off!

Until next week. goodbye.
